Ceasefire of hopes and doubts in Ukraine War

In a surprising move, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to 10, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory Day. The announcement caught many off guard, as past truces had quickly collapsed. Russia expressed hope that Ukraine would join in the ceasefire and open a path for peace talks.
Ukraine, however, remained cautious, pointing to previous broken agreements and ongoing Russian aggression, including a recent wave of drone attacks. While Moscow is said to be ready for unconditional dialogue, Ukraine is yet to decide on direct talks due to the annexation of its territory.
International attention grew as global leaders, including China’s President Xi Jinping, prepared to attend celebrations in Moscow. Many hoped this pause might spark new diplomatic efforts, though skepticism remained high.
As May approached, the world watched closely, uncertain if this ceasefire would mark the beginning of peace—or just another brief pause in a long war.
