India Hosts World's First Summit on Transaxillary Cardiac Surgery at Jayadeva Institute
TRANS AX SUMMIT 2025 - A World-First hosted by Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research showcase global breakthroughs in sternal-sparing heart surgery, positions Karnataka as a hub for minimally invasive cardiac innovation
Bengaluru I August 2 :
The TRANS AX SUMMIT 2025, the world’s first dedicated conference on the transaxillary approach to cardiac surgery, concluded today at the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, reaffirming India’s leadership in advancing patient-centric, minimally invasive heart surgery.
Held on August 1 and 2, the summit attracted over 350 in-person delegates and was streamed live to online viewers from India and abroad.
The focus of the conference was to promote awareness, share surgical experiences, and encourage wider adoption of the sternal-sparing transaxillary approach—a technique allowing cardiac surgery through a small incision under the arm, eliminating the need to cut through the sternum.
This minimally invasive method offers quicker recovery, less pain, and better cosmetic outcomes, and is gaining global traction. The summit provided a detailed overview of its applications, safety, and reproducibility.
A key highlight was a presentation by Dr. Rajesh Kishan Rao, who shared a case series of over 500 successful transaxillary cardiac surgeries performed at Sri Jayadeva Institute. His clinical outcomes and insights were widely appreciated and set a new benchmark in the field.
The summit also featured interactive case discussions led by international faculty from Italy and Spain, sparking active engagement and peer-to-peer knowledge exchange—further indicating a growing interest in less invasive approaches for complex cardiac procedures.
The event was organized under the patronage of Prof. K. S. Ravindranath, Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute, whose visionary leadership continues to elevate the institute's stature in global cardiac innovation. The scientific program was led by Chairman Prof. Prasanna Simha Mohan Rao, and Co-Chairmen Prof. Girish Basappa and Prof. Sunil P.K., who also served as the summit’s Treasurer.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Chief Guest Shri Mohammad Mohsin, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Medical Education, Government of Karnataka. He commended the Institute for organizing a globally significant summit and reiterated the state’s support for innovation in public health institutions.
Also present was Guest of Honour Smt. Dr. Sujatha Rathod, Director, Directorate of Medical Education, Government of Karnataka, whose commitment to academic excellence and surgical training in the government sector received heartfelt appreciation from the medical fraternity.
Speaking at the conclusion, Dr. Shilpa Suresh, Organizing Secretary, remarked:
“This summit has not only shared knowledge but created momentum. With growing global interest in sternal-sparing surgery, we are proud to have hosted the world’s first platform fully focused on the transaxillary approach, right here in Karnataka.”
With its overwhelming response, TRANS AX SUMMIT 2025 has paved the way for further adoption of transaxillary techniques and international collaboration—reinforcing Sri Jayadeva Institute’s role as a pioneer in academic excellence and surgical innovation.
