Mysuru Silk Shines on Global Stage: India Eyes Self-Reliance in Silk, Food & Dairy — Shobha Karandlaje

Bengaluru | October 24, 2025 :

Union Minister of State for MSME and Labour & Employment Shobha Karandlaje said that Mysuru Silk Sarees are witnessing rising global demand and called for enhanced production to meet international quality standards.

She was speaking after inaugurating the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the National Silkworm Seed Organization (NSSO) under the Central Silk Board in Bengaluru. The Minister also released a special postal stamp commemorating the milestone.

“Indian silk enjoys strong global appeal. Karnataka produces 40% of the nation’s silk, and this share must rise. Mysuru Silk is the pride of our state,” she said.

Karandlaje highlighted India’s progress toward self-reliance in food, dairy, and vegetable production, crediting the nation’s farmers for achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat in several key sectors.

She, however, pointed out that the country continues to import edible oil worth ₹2.5 lakh crore annually, besides a share of pulses and silk, and stressed on the need to reduce dependency through quality seeds, technology, and innovation.

“To double farmers’ income, quality, technology, and fair pricing are essential. Likewise, entrepreneurs must focus on export-grade quality to enhance profitability,” she added.

Silk as ‘Gold of the Nation’

Member of Parliament Dr. C.N. Manjunath described silk as “gold for the nation”—a steady source of monthly income for farmers without risk of loss. He called for doubling silk production and expanding spun mills to achieve full cocoon utilization.

He commended the Central Silk Board and NSSO for their contributions to quality seed production, farmer training, and technological advancement in sericulture.

Honouring the Backbone of Silk Industry

The event also honoured progressive silk farmers, new entrepreneurs, and retired Silk Board officials for their contribution to the sector.

Key dignitaries present included P. Shivakumar, CEO, Central Silk Board, and Dr. S. Manthira Moorthy, Director, NSSO.
