Victory for Farmers: Karnataka CM Cancels 1,777-Acre Acquisition Near KIA
After relentless farmer protests, Karnataka CM takes a pro-farmer stand, scraps industrial land acquisition near KIA; assures only voluntary land pooling henceforth.

In a major policy reversal prompted by sustained and spirited farmer protests, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday announced the complete withdrawal of the controversial 1,777-acre land acquisition in Devanahalli, near Kempegowda International Airport, earmarked for industrial development.
Facing weeks of agitation by local farmers determined to protect their agricultural lands, the government rescinded both preliminary and final notifications issued earlier for the proposed industrial zone. The protestors, many of whom had cultivated the land for generations, argued that the project would displace hundreds of families and devastate fertile farmland.
Speaking to the media, CM Siddaramaiah affirmed his government’s commitment to farmers' rights: “We have entirely dropped the acquisition notification. We respect the sentiments and livelihoods of our farmers. Going forward, only land voluntarily offered by farmers will be considered for industrial development.”
The Chief Minister further assured that 50% of the developed land would be returned to farmers who willingly participate in land pooling schemes, thereby securing both their livelihood and long-term stake in development.
“In keeping with our commitment to protect farmers’ interests and preserve fertile agricultural land, the Government of Karnataka has decided to completely withdraw the land acquisition process in Devanahalli taluk. While industrial growth is vital, our priority is inclusive development that respects the rights and livelihoods of our farming community. Only those who willingly offer their land will be part of any future development, and they will receive enhanced compensation and support. Agriculture will continue unhindered for those who choose to retain their land,” the CM said.
The announcement is being seen as a victory for farmers’ unity and a reflection of the government’s willingness to heed grassroots voices. Farmer leaders welcomed the move, calling it a testament to democratic protest and the resilience of Karnataka's agrarian communities.
This decision marks a significant pro-farmer stance by the Congress-led state government and could set a precedent for future land acquisition policies in the state.
