Twin Boost for Bengaluru: Elevated Roads to Ease Traffic, ₹4,000 Cr Plan to Clean Up the City

Karnataka DCM DK Shivakumar Announces 114-km Elevated Road Network, ₹4,000 Cr Waste Management Overhaul for Bengaluru

Twin Boost for Bengaluru: Elevated Roads to Ease Traffic, ₹4,000 Cr Plan to Clean Up the City

In a major push to decongest traffic and improve urban infrastructure, Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday unveiled two ambitious initiatives — a 114-kilometre elevated corridor project and a ₹4,000 crore upgrade to the city’s waste management system under the Swachha Bengaluru initiative.

A day after the state cabinet cleared the much-delayed tunnel road proposal, Shivakumar said the elevated corridor network aims to address Bengaluru’s persistent traffic woes.

“Traffic police have already shared their inputs on the tunnel project. Entry and exit logistics are being fine-tuned to prevent bottlenecks,” he noted, adding that no exits will be permitted within a 1-km radius of Vidhana Soudha to avoid gridlocks at the city’s nerve centre.

The meeting also reviewed the upcoming two-phase tunnel road project, with tenders for Phase 1 expected shortly.

Massive Clean-Up Underway: 33 Waste Zones Identified

Parallelly, a comprehensive waste management overhaul is being rolled out at a cost of ₹4,000 crore. Bengaluru will be divided into 33 zones to streamline garbage collection and disposal operations. The tenders for this seven-year project will be floated soon, the DCM said.

Under the Swachha Bengaluru drive, a one-time clearance of construction debris and dumped waste will be undertaken across the city. Citizens have been urged to report waste build-up to the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), which will deploy marshals and officers for on-ground action.

An integrated solid waste management tender will also be issued within the next 15 days, Shivakumar confirmed.
